Skin Care Myths… We’ve all heard of them, and we’ve all done them, and I have no doubt that some of you still believe they genuinely work. So fetch yourself a green tea, settle in and brace yourself for the top 5 skin care myths that are absolute NO GO’S!!!
1. Tooth paste on your blemishes.
Put the Colgate tube down! I’m sure you were told that this dries out the bacteria in your pimples, and yes, it may seem like it’s doing so, but this isn’t necessarily the case. Toothpaste actually dries out your skin, not your blemishes! Meaning what it really does is cause irritation, redness, and peeling which sounds just as bad as having a pimple.
So why not treat it properly with a drying lotion, such as the famous Mario Badescu, an easy $24 fix at MECCA.
2. Exfoliating your face with an exfoliating mitt.
This hurts my face just thinking about it! I understand that it may seem like a clever idea, but it really isn’t. Using an exfoliating mitt on your face is going to cause irritation, redness, flakiness, dryness, and it’s actually going to move around the bacteria that’s already in your blemishes. Not to mention the exisiting bacteria buildup in your mitt, meaning you don’t want to be putting that onto your face. Talk about gross!
3. Using alcohol to refine your pores.
If drinking alcohol is known for ageing the appearance of your skin, what do you think it’s doing when you’re actually putting it on your skin? Sure alcohol kills bacteria, so it seems appealing to put it on your blemishes, but it’s going to create an enormous amount of dryness and irritation. And for us oily skinned girls its only going to stimulate your oil production taking you into a tragic repetitive cycle of you splashing alcohol on your face to avoid the excessive oiliness!
Instead, kill two birds with one stone with the Body Shop’s Tea Tree Mattifying Lotion. Just $18 for reduced oil and blemishes.
4. Washing your face with soap.
This myth makes me cringe the most, purely because I use to be completely guilty of doing this! Using soap on your face will strip the protective barrier on your skin AND strip all of those natural oils, leaving you with redness, irritation, and excessive oiliness later on down the track. So put the soap bar down and fetch yourself a PH balanced cleanser.
5. Popping your pimples will get rid of them.
Okay lets be real, we are all a little guilty of this one. But did you know that squeezing the puss out of your pimples will actually make the bacteria spread underneath? Which means even more pimples to pop… and then more bacteria spreading. It’s a never-ending cycle!
