New York Fashion Week S/S ’17 Wrap Up

They say it’s the city that never sleeps and in this last week, we’re certain it didn’t! Fashion Week dominated headlines as it kick-started its month-long runway spectacle in New York, with high-profile designers from around the globe showcasing their take on the hottest and upcoming knockout trends. As always, the end of the week brings with it a trend forecast for the seasons ahead, and we’re certainly feeling a little confused as to what’s hot and what’s not come S/S ‘17!

But we’ve trawled the runway and have seen some new and recurring trends emerge, and we’re obsessed – here is our edit of what really went down in New York!

THE NAKED SHOULDER

If you’re obsessed with off-shoulder anything and everything, then boy do we have some news for you! The S/S ‘17 collections by Monse and Hang Chong both took an epic spin on the  off-shoulder macro trend saturating our news feeds, and delivered us with some funky and innovative ways to style our beloved original. Monse showcased tailored trousers, oversized silhouettes and belts to emphasise modern-day femininity, and provide us with a sense of ‘what women are actually wearing’. Whilst Chong’s runway consisted of ruffles and florals, showing us the flirty side to femininity. A mixture of precious silks and pure organza, this neutral-paletted collection created beautiful movement.

THE RUFFLES

After so many structured shapes, we noticed something a little softer and a little more delicate: the introduction of ruffles. Oversized, billowing, accentuated and complex shapes made their big debut on the runway at Rodarte and Altuzarra’s S/S ‘17 collection. Playing with soft silhouettes and layered ties of fabric ensured this was one trend not to be missed. Rodarte’s gowns are nothing but glamorous; rhinestone embellishments, dreamy lace, sequins, and gold glitter were seen amongst the floral prints. Rodarte paired his dress with a studded leather black belt and statement boots for a more punked up look to suit the elaborate collection. Altuzarra’s collection brought something a little more youthful and sultry to the runway, all with keeping sex appeal in mind. His cheeky bralettes, plunging necklines, and thigh-high dress splits looked sophisticated yet alluring!

COLOUR BLOCKING

We agree, it might not be for everyone, but we applaud anyone who takes on the loud prints and bold colour blocking seen at Proenza Schouler and Phillip Lim. There’s never been a better time to unleash your look at me personality. You’d think we’re completely crazy, but it seems styling graphic colours and clashing geometrics have never been easier! It was certainly popular in this year’s show, both designer’s collections delivering unique and daring pieces like no other. The Proenza Schouler boys provided a knockout show that emphasised their use of colour. After seasons of using neutrals, the duo brought life to the runway with bright primaries and harsh blocking.

THE CUT OUTS

But wait, there’s more! Just when we thought we’d seen enough from the Proenza Schouler duo, their designs took on a new creation, and we’re adoring it! The drool-worthy cutout trend that the boys flaunted in their show was one of our most ready-to-wear choices. With plunging necklines, heart-shaped cutouts, and bold black trimming, we saw just the right amount of skin with a whole lot of edge! Without being too revealing, the cutouts provided a touch of sass and an ode to the sixties we needed. Trust the gurus on this one… it won’t be a trend to regret!

FUTURISTIC SPORTS-LUXE

Sports-luxe took on a futuristic twist at DKNY, with a plethora of track-star styles; from bra sets, hoods, boiler-suits, track pants and sweats. Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, the designer duo taking over the reigns from Donna Karen late last year, used a combination of cobalt blue and navy shades, an assortment of body-skimming and oversized shapes and complemented with bumbags and knee-high rubber shoes accessorising. Our fave style icon, Bella Hadid sauntered down the runway with a bad-ass attitude and a punchy dark lip, making this our favourite style of NYFW S/S ’17 yet!
